In 2017, Byte Construct had the privilege of partnering with Australia Post for the Construction Management of the base build upgrade project at the iconic GPO building. This multifaceted project involved a blend of demolition and modernisation efforts, targeting existing services like lifts, chillers, and electrical systems.
A key aspect of the project was the installation of new structural beams and escalators, carefully integrated into the existing Heritage building. These upgrades were crucial in preparing the space for a new retail tenant, H&M, and spanned from the basement to the seventh level of the building.
The success of this project hinged on fostering a close working relationship with multiple stakeholders, including the Heritage Council, Australia Post, and H&M Retailer. Through collaborative efforts, we were able to modernise the GPO building while preserving its historical significance, setting a new standard for heritage building renovations in Australia.
With its blend of modern amenities and respect for historical architecture, this project serves as a benchmark for how to successfully navigate the complexities of upgrading heritage-listed buildings in Australia’s construction landscape.
